Former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari died on SUnday, July 15, 2025 in London.

President William Ruto has conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Nigeria following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement, Ruto described Buhari’s passing as a profound loss not only for Nigeria but for the entire African continent, which he said had greatly benefited from the former leader’s wisdom and dedication to the liberation and prosperity of his people.

“President Buhari’s demise is a loss not only to the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but also to the entire African Continent, which has been immeasurably enriched by his wisdom and steadfast commitment,” the statement read.

Ruto praised Buhari for his strong anti-corruption stance, his leadership in advancing regional security, and his support for Africa’s economic integration agenda.

He also fondly recalled Buhari’s state visit to Nairobi in January 2016, which he said marked a turning point in Kenya-Nigeria relations.

“We also remember with sincere appreciation his message of congratulations in August 2022, following my election as President of Kenya - a testament to his abiding faith in democratic governance and the enduring ties between our nations,” Ruto noted.

At the same time, he reaffirmed Kenya’s solidarity with Nigeria during this time of mourning and expressed hope that Buhari’s legacy would continue to inspire the continent in the pursuit of peace, dignity, and shared prosperity.

Buhari passed on Sunday at a London clinic at the age of 82.
