Newly crowned Kisumu County rugby champions Otieno Oyoo High School kicked off their pursuit for a maiden Nyanza Region Secondary School rugby sevens title campaign with a 34-5 win over Nyambaria.
Otieno Oyoo dethroned giants Maseno School at the county to be crowned champions after stunning the defending champs 19-5 three weeks ago.
Speaking after the match, Otieno Oyoo, Principal Boaz Adit, who formally guided Koyonzo Secondary School to East African success, said he is building a new beast at his new home.
“Rugby is life for me, and I am happy that after two years, we are champions of Kisumu. Otieno Oyoo has quality, and we are going for the regional title now.
“The goal is East Africa in the end, and I want to show people that all it takes is interest and focus to make it at the top and not the name of the school. Anyone or any school can be a champion,” said Adit.

Meanwhile, defending champions Henry Odiwuor scored a hat-trick of tries to inspire defending champions St Mary’s Yala to a massive 50-0 win over Kanga from Migori County.
Innocent Murunda and Ayub Sisia added two tries each before Timothy Wesonga sealed the big win for the Siaya County rugby giants who are targeting to qualify for the East African games for the third straight year running.
“The plan was to begin the games on a high note. We wanted to send the message that despite our Term One rugby 15s disappointments, Yala is still a giant in rugby.
“Our goal remains East Africa, and these regional finals are just our training sessions,” said Yala rugby coach George Kerima.
Migori County champions Anjego, on the other hand, defeated Mbita 26-12 as Cardinal Otunga saw off Gekano 28-0.
In the girls’ category, Sidindi Secondary School from Siaya saw off Anjego 27-0 while defending champions Nyakach Girls stunning St Annes 21-0.
Kisii County champions Nyagichenche picked a 28-0 win over Nyamira Girls.
